If you have asked yourself, “how do I make a relaxing master bedroom,” or, “can I make my master bedroom relaxing on a budget,” this is for you! You can have a relaxing master bedroom by only changing a few small things.
Parents deserve a relaxing master bedroom!
As first-time parents and having moved into our home shortly before Del got here, all the home updates revolved around getting ready for him! I think that was the biggest prelude to having a baby. They always come first and often you might not be able to take as much time for yourself! Can anyone relate?
After we moved him into his own room, it felt like the perfect time to do something for us!!! And let me tell you, after long days and nights we needed to have a space to unwind & RELAX! Without a ton of spare time, we focused on small updates that would make a big impact.
These are the 5 easy updates we made for a relaxing master bedroom.

1. Paint:
We painted a dark & moody, green focal wall with a calming grey accent color.
Paint is always my FIRST step in updating a space because it can be so transformational and cost-effective. To make our master bedroom cozy, I debated about adding the dark green focal wall or staying neutral. Needless to say, we went bold, and I am SO happy we did! The dark green is Jasper by Sherwin Williams and is the perfect restful background that sets the stage for sleep. It totally helps our eyes relax compared to a very bright and airy color (which is normally my style!) It is also the color of Del's wall in his nursery.
It is hard to imagine it any other color at this point. It’s truly so calming to walk into our room and see this shade. Adding the board and battens gave it some much-needed texture too. (I’ll be sharing how we made this wall in a weekend soon!)
We painted the rest of the room in Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams which is a really neutral, and calming gray. It honestly goes with everything! It makes for a great adjacent color to keep the vibe relaxing and looks super fresh too!
If you only have the time and resources to change one thing in your room, I highly recommend the power of paint!!
2. Lighting:
Updated lighting including fan with warm light option and task lighting.
I don’t know if becoming a mom instantly affects your eyesight, or if that is just a product of less sleep?! (Insert overtired laugh.) But, good lighting has become more important than ever. We changed out a dated ceiling fan that wasn’t our style. We opted for an LED fan with lights that we can change from warm to bright depending on what we need. The warm option is great for a calm, relaxing environment.
We definitely use our bedside lamps the most for lighting. They help make our relaxing master bedroom feel so much better at night. Whether it is doing a little bit of work, reading, or just hanging out before bed, the warm ambient lighting is peaceful and perfect. After super stimulating days, it makes a big difference to be able to turn the lights down low before bed. Ours were on clearance, but these lamp bases and shades are a similar style from Target.
3: Mindful, meaningful, & peaceful artwork:
Decluttered bedside tables & walls to only include meaningful artwork & photos.
Having a toddler running around is essentially like a mini-tornado that is impossible to clean up after. I will admit I sometimes feel like a tornado myself. But, it’s amazing how much I craved minimalism in our master compared to before having Del.
By decluttering and getting rid of the excess STUFF that would accumulate on our bedside tables, and being very intentional about what we hung on the walls it instantly made the space more relaxing. It helps me feel at peace every time I walk into this room.
We have two pieces of art that are special to us in the space. The first is a wood sign with one of our wedding readings hand-written on it. It adds warmth and coziness right when you walk in with the wood tone. We found it randomly at a market when we lived in Morgantown, WV!
The second piece is a print called Low Tide by Collection Prints that we had framed through Frame It Easy. It totally grounds our space and reminds us of two places that are meaningful to us: San Diego and Ireland. It's impossible to not feel relaxed when thinking of the ocean and these special places. I absolutely love it and often use it to stage my furniture, like this dresser (yay for multi-purpose!)
We also have a few frames on our bedside tables with family photos. Our little family is our everything, so it's what we love to surround ourselves with. For as crazy as each day can be running after an energizer-bunny toddler and craving time to relax, it never fails that the first thing we talk about once we hit the bed is Del. We love looking at these pictures and recalling everything he has learned and who he is becoming. It's just CRAZY! Our frames were also clearance, but these frames would be really cute!
4. Comfortable linens & textured throw:
Added Parachute bedding & chunky throw blanket.
We have been avid parachute bedding users since Mike found them when we lived in San Diego. I remember him raving about how this new bedding was supposed to feel super cool, yet casual & comfortable. The fact that he was pumped about it made me equally as excited! Now their bedding is our go-to.
We have the percale duvet and sheet set, and just recently got the brushed cotton sheets in the color Ochre. Mustard yellow and burnt orange are two of my favorite colors so this pulled on my heartstrings big time! It is amazing how big a difference new, extremely comfortable linens can make in creating a relaxing master bedroom!
It makes the chance to fall into bed that much more exciting because it’s downright comfy! They are a little of an investment, but they truly get more comfortable with time and are really great quality. We wash ours A LOT, due to a big-ol’ bulldog, and they are still in fantastic shape.
When it’s a little cooler we also have a chunky throw we add on top. Adding texture with a knit throw is a great way to make it feel cozy and relaxing. This is just from Target, and I love it.
5. Add a Rug:
Added a super soft rug to ground the space & add some warmth.
Even though we have carpet in our master I still wanted to bring in a rug. Rugs have the power to instantly define a space and add comfort! I had been looking for one for a long time online, and just couldn't pull the trigger. They can be a bigger expense, and I was nervous about the colors not being what I wanted. So, when I was shopping at a local marketplace and saw this Loloi rug I think I audibly said, “it's PERFECT.” Like, exact colors I was hoping to find, and when I ran my hand over I was SOLD.
However, I saw the price tag and was not lol. It was $400+ at this store, which I know isn’t that much compared to some rugs, but still, more than I wanted to spend. So, I took my photo of the name and hoped I could find it cheaper, and I DID! Incrediblerugs.com had it and they had a 15% off running, another sale on top, and free shipping. I got this beauty for $265 which I thought was awesome!
Can you feel my excitement?! Seriously, this is the softest rug I have ever owned. It totally anchors our space, and instantly made it feel cozy and relaxing! Real-life: Bronx is probably the one who enjoys it as much as I do.
5 easy updates we made for a relaxing master bedroom recap:
Sometimes doing a room refresh can feel so overwhelming, like you have to do a huge overhaul. But with a few small changes like these, you can totally have a relaxing master bedroom to cozy up in! For us, updating 1. paint, 2. lighting, 3. minimal art, 4. linens, and 5. a rug completely transformed our bedroom from just another room to a relaxing oasis. It also didn’t happen all at once and that is OK!
There is still plenty we’d like to update and I’m sure those changes will be slow going. So, until then, this is our relaxing master bedroom so far! I’m trying to be better about sharing the in-progress projects because let’s face it, things just take longer now that we’re busy chasing a toddler!
I hope you can find some relaxation and peace within your own space! If you try any of these things, let me know 😊 Tag @megdeldesign on IG – I would love to see!
